Description
Lavender crepe myrtle bloomed throughout the summer at Greenfield Farm. Like the English daffodils that surrounded the farmhouse in late February, these trees were not native to Mississippi. They originated in southeast Asia and were introduced to America around 1790. They thrive in Mississippi because they love heat.
The presence of crepe myrtles, as well as daffodils and pink roses, hinted at the past when occupants of the farmhouse planted ornamentals. These domestic gestures helped me picture the farm as a home. These flowers made me think of the people who planted them long ago.
