Abstract

Attending public school from kindergarten through 12th grade in a struggling Ohio school district, I experienced the inequities in the public education system from a young age, particularly with tests like the SAT that can have a major impact on our futures. After becoming a National Merit Finalist, I wanted to help even the playing field for students from poor districts like mine by founding a non-profit, Scholar Power, to offer free PSAT, SAT, and ACT education and preparation.

Starting college, I recognized similar inequities with the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) and the pre-law process in general. As the first in my family to pursue law school, I had little help preparing for the LSAT or working my way through the admissions process, and I saw the disparity between wealthy and poor students with access to test prep, tutors, mentors, and other crucial support. Seeing a lack of free and equitable pre-law opportunities on campus, I decided to found the Ole Miss Pre-Law Club, with the mission of creating a free inclusive environment for students interested in Pre-Law to communicate, build connections, learn from each other, and prepare for law school, and to educate students on topics surrounding the LSAT and law school admissions.

Since starting the club, student interest has continued to grow, with close to 200 members joining and registering on the ForUM (the University’s online resource for events and student organizations) since the club officially started last semester. Over the past two semesters, I have worked to hold officer elections, create social/networking opportunities, arrange speaker events with attorneys and law school admissions experts, and offer LSAT preparation, all at no cost to students.

I hope to establish the club as a sustainable resource on campus in order to provide ongoing free support to students considering a legal education, creating inclusive opportunities that benefit all pre-law students at the University of Mississippi.
