Abstract

The goal of this project was to create a design for Toyota Manufacturing in Blue Springs, Mississippi that would allow the proper alignment of cassettes carrying fenders in the body weld assembly production line. The fender cassettes maneuver down the assembly line carrying fenders through the body weld assembly process. Each cassette has polyurethane blocks attached where the fender rests. There are five of these touch points along the cassette. Overtime the blocks are worn to the point where the production line will halt due to the fenders falling out of the cassette. The goal of our team was to create a fixture that would be able to check if the polyurethane blocks were properly aligned on the cassette at any given time. To create this fixture detailed measurements of several points on the cassette were made. Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) Software was used to create checking blocks that would precisely align with the blocks on the cassette as well as create the overall fixture itself. Other design specifications included the ability for the fixture to be mobile, ergonomics, and space constraints. These were all factored into the final design that met Toyotas requirements. The final design included a flat-top rolling cart with the checking fixture sitting on top. The final checking fixture design included a handle for ease of use, that could be placed in the cassette with the cassette arm fully extended.
