Description

Operation Supplement Safety (OPSS) is the Department of Defense’s (DoD) go-to program for anything related to dietary supplements (DS). OPSS partners with other federal departments, professional and academic institutions to provide the most current, evidence-based information, resources, and tools for education and decision-making. In March 2022, DoD Instruction (DoDI) 6130.06, Use of Dietary Supplements in the DoD was issued. It states that OPSS will maintain the official DoD Prohibited Dietary Supplement Ingredients List and provide DS educational training.

OPSS is developing a comprehensive ingredient database (OPSSID) that will list all ingredients (to include prohibited ones) found in DS, along with their various synonyms. It will include a variety of functional aspects. First, it provides various terms by which an ingredient is or could be listed on the product label. Second, ingredients will be color coded ratings according to whether they are prohibited for use, could result in minor to significant health risks, present no significant health risks when used as recommended, or have insufficient information to establish color code for risk. Third, warnings for certain ingredients with known potential side effects will be included.

The database currently has over 10,200 terms (1,530 substances and more than 8,670 synonyms/other names). It includes ingredients on the Prohibited List, substances present in DS products that OPSS receives Ask-the-Expert questions about, and substances not listed on labels, but identified by laboratory testing performed by OPSS and its partners. Data sheets for each substance will be continuously developed and updated with terms and safety related information. Sources include an array of reputable online databases coupled with scientific literature to support ratings, warnings, or other federal advisories.

When launched, OPSSID will be a robust, unique, and comprehensive database of ingredients found in DS and will serve DoD, our federal partners, and the public at large.
