Description

Interview conducted by author Jere Nash with John Hampton Stennis in the process of writing Mississippi Politics: The Struggle for Power, 1976-2006. Stennis served in the Mississippi House from 1969 to 1983 and campaigned unsuccessfully for the U.S. House of Representatives in 1978. Topics covered include public utilities; Cliff Finch; Jimmy Carter; banker's trust fund and savings and loans industry; 1982 reelection campaign of U.S. Senator John C. Stennis; Stennis's decision to run for the congress in 1978; Stennis's tenure in the state House; state taxes; judicial system; and Stennis as chair of the Judiciary A committee.
