Description
Interview conducted by author Jere Nash with Charles Evers in the process of writing Mississippi Politics: The Struggle for Power, 1976-2006. Evers was the first African American elected as a major of a biracial Mississippi city since Reconstruction and ran unsuccessfully for U.S. House in 1968, governor in 1971, and the U.S. Senate in 1978. Topics covered include campaigning for U.S. House in 1968; mayor of Fayette, Mississippi in 1969; Bennie Thompson; Bill Waller; campaigning for governor; 1972 congressional race against Ellis Bodron; attending Democratic National Conventions; bootlegging liquor and William Winter; Jimmy Carter; campaigning for U.S. Senate in 1978; Thad Cochran; D.A. Biglane and civil rights protests in Natchez, Mississippi; Robert F. Kennedy; bringing in Muhammed Ali and Kris Kristofferson during the 1978 campaign; serving as chancery clerk and supervisor; and WMPR radio station and Evers' radio show.
