Abstract

In this interview, Hayden Gates discusses growing up in Mississippi as a Transgender person. Having been adopted at a very young age, Gates details some of the struggles he experienced in both the foster care system and in his adoptive home. He also shares his experience serving in the Marines from 1989 to 1992, during which it was illegal to serve while openly gay. Having overcome a difficult road to transitioning and getting Trans-inclusive healthcare, Gates uses what he’s learned from his own experiences to advocate for and support other LGBTQ+ folks.
