Abstract
Amber King is 43 years old and has spent her career as an English instructor. She is the mother of an adopted son named Ethan, and she has been married to her wife, Sihya, for four years. They currently reside near Tupelo, Mississippi. King came to terms with herself “later in life” at the age of 30. She attributes this moment of “knowing” to country singer Chely Wright coming out as gay in 2010. Growing up Pentecostal, King was forced to unravel the belief systems that come along with the denomination, which she began prior to coming to terms with her sexuality. King expresses a desire for people to understand that queer people are just people who share many of the same daily tasks and responsibilities as nonqueer people. Notably, King expressed a recent increase in feeling afraid as a queer person.
