Abstract

In this interview, Danny McArthur discusses her experiences as a Black nonbinary journalist in Mississippi. Born and raised in Georgia, McArthur discusses receiving the Zell Miller Scholarship to attend the University of Georgia’s (UGA) Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication. McArthur shares information about queer organizations at UGA such as PRISM and LGBT Ambassadors that greatly impacted her experiences as a queer person of color throughout college. After college, McArthur found herself leaning towards a journalism job in Mississippi, which she felt would allow her to represent Black and other minority voices within the news of the predominantly-black state. Throughout the interview, McArthur dives into the intersectionality of her Black and queer identities and how those identities impact the way she does journalism. She is currently doing environmental justice reporting for the Gulf States Newsroom.
