Abstract

In this interview, Jamie Rodrigues discusses her experiences as a Mexican American trans woman and drag performer in Mississippi, reflecting on identity, artistic expression, community, and resilience through her drag persona, Kiki Zora. In her interview, Jamie recalls hardships she has faced regarding racial prejudice and homophobia. In doing so, Jamie recalls her experiences growing up between Texas and Mississippi, navigating cultural differences, language barriers, familial hardships, and racism.

Jamie also reflects on how drag became a form of self-discovery, creativity, and healing, helping her process trauma, embrace her gender identity, and find community within Southern Queer spaces. Topics discussed include trans identity in Southern drag culture, chosen family, food service, alternative drag performance, Queer visibility in Mississippi, and the importance of LGBTQ+ safe spaces. Furthermore, Rodrigues reflects on her hopes for greater compassion, representation, and opportunity within Mississippi’s Queer and immigrant communities.
