Abstract

In this interview, Dajoure Mister discusses his experiences as a drag performer in Mississippi and reflects on his identity, artistic expression, and community through his drag persona, Seraphina. Conducted in Jackson, Mississippi, in this interview, Dajoure recalls challenges and opportunities within the state’s LGBTQ+ and drag communities, including limited Queer spaces, navigating Black identity in Queer communities, financial barriers, and the influence of media portrayals of drag culture through shows such as RuPaul's Drag Race. As well, Dajoure recounts how Seraphina was shaped by influential women in his life such as: family matriarchs, comic book characters, and pop culture figures. As well, exploring how drag has helped him overcome stage fright, gain confidence, and become more comfortable with his sexuality. Topics discussed include family acceptance and religious tension, Queer visibility in Mississippi, Black identity in Queer spaces, advocacy for LGBTQ+ and trans communities, and the importance of chosen family. Furthermore, Dajoure reflects on his hopes for greater unity and opportunity within Mississippi’s Queer and drag communities.
