Description
Athletic trainers are highly qualified, multi-skilled health care professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician. However, being an athletic trainer is so much more. The profession of athletic training is challenging and becoming an athletic trainer is much more than any one person can be taught from a book or in a course. It is a compilation of many different facets, like the many brushstrokes that appear to have been used in the creation of this art. There is no black and white in athletic training but rather a blending of colors that creates what we describe to our students as the ‘grey’. The reds, whites, and blues, and the blurred edges of where they all meet, represent how all the many working components of our curriculum (from the didactic to the clinical and everywhere in between) are combined to make a product. Athletic training is messy and on the surface of what we see as a patient or athlete lies a much more complex amalgamation of intrinsic and extrinsic factors that result in a patient’s pathology. That mess is athletic training and we are athletic trainers.
