Description

This exhibit included illustrations, photographs, publications, correspondence, and ephemera related to the five iterations of the USS Mississippi.

When the U. S. Navy announced plans to decommission the USS Mississippi (BB- 41), various cities and groups within the state lobbied to save the ship as a historical attraction. When those efforts failed, relics off the World War II legend were distributed to a number of organizations. The University of Mississippi received several pieces of memorabilia which are on permanent display on the second floor of Barnard Hall which houses the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps (NROTC) unit, including a large scale model of the battleship.
