Description

Over the last 50 years, Jackson, Mississippi- based Malaco Records has established itself as a unique purveyor of African American music – from southern soul to Blues to gospel. Malaco's business model of catering to its niche audience has left it one of the last standing truly independent labels in American music. As founder Tommy Couch Sr. put it, we don't always sell a million, but every record we put out is basically successful.

Tommy Couch Sr. first began booking bands as social chairman of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity at the University of Mississippi in 1961 under the banner “Campus Attractions.” After graduation, Couch moved to Jackson, Mississippi, where he founded Malaco booking agency in 1965 while working as a pharmacist. He was soon joined by fellow fraternity member Wolf Stevenson, and by 1966, Malaco started recording artists.

Exhibit includes recordings and promotional materials.
