New Orleans Jan 19th Dear Ma We arrived on the 18th after being on the boat from Monday night until thursday morning. the steam pipe bursted and caused a great deal of alarm. we drifted towe miles down the river. I writ and tell you I am well expecting you would uneasy. our boat stoped at Baton rouge our friend, Mr. Hatch came on board and was very glad to see me an [sead] al was well. I went down street to day but could not find Uncle Tom. I will commence going to school on Monday. I hope you will excuse such bad writing but hope to do better next time. Mr. [Pilcher] leaves to morrow eving and has offered to take a letter. all the little girls ar well Katy sends love to you give my love to Pa & grandma tell Pa I payed his bill to Mr. Hardaway.
