Abstract

Private liberal arts institutions are widely recognized for their traditional approach to education, which emphasizes developing students' intellectual capacities through studying subjects in the humanities, social sciences, sciences, mathematics, and the arts. Focused on enhancing students' critical thinking and writing skills, private liberal arts colleges are dedicated to promoting academic excellence. With small class sizes and opportunities for intense student engagement, these institutions have great potential to create inclusive campus environments. This DiP (Dissertation in Practice) will develop a multilevel student community engagement model for a private suburban liberal arts college to improve students' campus experiences and foster a sense of belonging among all community members. As DEI offices are dismantled at higher education institutions nationwide, such a model becomes essential to ensure all students feel a strong sense of belonging on campus, while having a diverse college experience. Given this change in landscape around DEI, engaging all students within the campus community is vital to having an inclusive college environment.

Private liberal arts colleges, with their responsibility to provide students with a traditional liberal education, have a unique opportunity to enhance the multicultural competence of students, faculty, and staff. This DiP aims to analyze qualitative data from college policies, programs, and mission statements, with a focus on the distinctive role of a private suburban liberal arts college in promoting a diverse and inclusive community.
