Location

Start Date

Description

  • William Faulkner, the Bailey Family, and Rowan Oak / Ike S. Trotter and Cham Trotter
  • Legacy: The Currency of Eternity / Gloria Burgess
I came to understand the profound nature of legacy through my father, Earnest McEwen, Jr., and his life-changing relationship with Mr. Faulkner. As my dad’s benefactor, Faulkner paid for my dad to attend college with no strings attached, transforming the trajectory of my family for all time. Faulkner only asked that my dad help someone else when he was able to do so. After my dad’s untimely death, my mom, Mildred Blackmon McEwen, gave me her blessing to share the story of my father’s fateful encounter with Faulkner and their subsequent, if unlikely, friendship. With deep gratitude, I lift up these two men who respected one another’s dignity at a time in our nation’s history when this behavior was at odds with the social and cultural norms.
