Interview conducted by author Jere Nash with Pat Derian in the process of writing Mississippi Politics: The Struggle for Power, 1976-2006. Derian served as national committeewoman at the 1968 Democratic National Convention; deputy director of the Jimmy Carter campaign in 1976; Assistant Secretary of State for Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs from 1977 to 1981. Topics covered include George Wallace; Jimmy Carter and his presidential campaign; Democratic Party in Mississippi during in 1976; position at the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare; appointment at the Department of State to handle human rights issues; relationship with James O. Eastland; lack of anyone from Mississippi congressional delegation at Derian's swearing-in ceremony; Carter endorsed by Eastland, George Wallace, and Griffin Bell; segregation; Derian's experiences during the civil rights era; a meeting with Citizens Council leader William J.
