Interview conducted by author Jere Nash with Brad Dye in the process of writing Mississippi Politics: The Struggle for Power, 1976-2006. Dye served three four-year terms as Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi from 1980 to 192. Topics covered included Dye's service in the state senate; Carroll Gartin; Paul B. Johnson Jr.; Dye as Lieutenant Governor and leader of the state senate; rules changes for the senate; William Winter; Buddy Newman; gaming legislation to allow casinos in the state; Ellis Bodron; education reform legislation; Dye's involvement with passing legislation; separation of powers legislation in 1984; budget commission; 1987 highway legislation; Medicaid; greater difficulty in passing legislation through the House; Bill Allain and Ray Mabus as governors; Ross Barnett; segregation; integration of the University of Mississippi as a pivotal moment; J.P. Coleman; James O. Eastland and John Stennis; legalizing alcohol; Paul B. Johnson Jr.'s decision to run for lieutenant governor in 1959; Dye's appointment to the senate appropriations committee and the education committee; traveling up to Oxford with Governor Ross Barnett to prevent James Meredith from registering; Bill Waller; Eastland and federal judicial appointments in general and specifically Harold Cox and Thurgood Marshall; Kennedy family and Eastland; and the death of Jimmie Walker.
