Abstract
In this interview, Fabian Adonis Nelson discusses his experience being an openly gay black man running for Mississippi House of Representatives. Born and raised in a religious family in Yazoo City, Mississippi, Nelson discusses his faith and his trailblazing ancestors that paved the way and set the bar for him. Nelson then discusses his journey to fatherhood in which he has adopted one and homed three other sons through the foster care system. Nelson discusses what it’s like running for office as an openly gay man, sharing outside ridicule he’s faced as well as support. Throughout the interview, Nelson acknowledges the need for representation of marginalized groups in Mississippi politics and how he plans to be just that. Nelson makes clear that members of the LGBTQ+ community are alive and well in Mississippi.
