Abstract

In this interview, Sihya Smith discusses her journey back to Mississippi after leaving for a fresh start. With deep family roots in Tupelo, Mississippi, Smith discusses Tupelo history and how she found herself needing to leave the area after getting into trouble at a young age. After leaving Mississippi, Smith lived and worked in various places across the country. Smith shares her experiences growing up in an evangelical Christian family and how she grew to reject that culture. Upon returning to Mississippi for school and family, Smith pursued a career in education and would eventually meet her wife and son. Smith discusses what she calls her own little queer community in Mississippi as well as changes she has seen in Mississippi as a result of the current political climate.
