Description

The Department of Archives and Special Collections recently acquired two exceptionally well captioned photo albums kept by Betty Rose Mermelstein of Natchez, Mississippi, home to the oldest Jewish community in Mississippi. These albums appear to have been compiled around her senior year in 1946, although some photographs date from an earlier period. Numerous snapshots depict her life at school, showing her large group of friends, while others showcase images of her extended family. At least fifty photographs show men in uniform and a scattered series includes images of her friend, Sam Schwarz, then serving in France, Germany, and England.

Betty was an active member in her Jewish community, with at least one hundred pictures depicting her involvement in youth groups and events related to the Temple B’Nai Israel. Featured [in this exhibit] are scans of selected images from her original scrapbooks.

See the Betty Mermelstein Collection in eGrove to see the scrapbooks in their entirety.
